Holier than Thou: Precision Holes by Drilling, Boring, and Reaming
It's imperative that design engineers understand the full journey of the parts they design, from the drawing definition, through manufacturing, and inspection. One of the most common features in machine design is a hole. Whether it accepts a bolt or holds a precision bearing, it has to be the right size and in the right location for the machine to function properly. In this video, we'll outline the considerations for designing holes and precision bores, give you some tips for machining them reliably and cost-effectively, and compare the different ways they may be inspected.

O-Rings? O-Yeah! How to Select, Design, and Install O-Ring Seals
Переглядів 1,4 млн5 років тому
O-rings are the epitome of elegant engineering: The ring itself costs only a few cents, and the groove it goes in is simple and easy to manufacture. But despite this simplicity, the resulting seal is able to reliably hold many thousands of psi of pressure. O-rings are definitely a machine design component you’ll want to be familiar with, and in this video, we’re going to tell you all about how ...

Very nice. I have an application where my static rod will be between two sizes. I.e a 113 Buna N O ring will have a 9% stretch but a 114 will have about 0.5%. The 113 feels about right using a 50 durometer i.e soft O ring. The application will run at up to 230F. I think a 113/50 is about the best choice in this application.

This is a really great video. A few years ago, I had to design a master cylinder and it took weeks of going through textbooks to finally land on the lifersaver that was the Parker handbook. (Not an ad) Pretty much everything important was covered here and if you need more information you know the terms to look up.

I am using a 12mm bolt and nut for the installation of tow hitch receiver for my bike rack. Is it not a good idea to use 14mm washer on a 12mm bolt? What is that 2mm internal clearance going to cause? 14mm washer is what's currently available, so i used it. Should I remove and replace it with a 12mm instead?

Sure, a manual tool will provide a "more accurate" measurement "faster" than a CMM that can run a program with no operator intervention and is accurate to 6 decimal places... keep on telling yourself that. Are manual metrology tools valuable? Absolutely. For one-offs and prototypes, or spot-checking features, there's absolutely value. For production runs, even short runs at a job shop, the CMM is king if the shop can afford one.

Would you be able to explain the actual squeeze listed in the parker o-ring handbook on the page where it has the width and depth. The cross-section minus the gland depth is different from the actual squeeze? That is the bit I don't understand.

Feb 1986: The president of the Parker Seal Group today said the rubber seals manufactured by his firm for joints between shuttle rocket booster fuel segments met all specifications. Pat Pastryk said neither NASA nor the company that built the solid rocket boosters had ever questioned Parker about its product used in the space shuttle program. Speculation on the cause of the Jan. 28 explosion that killed the seven Challenger astronauts has centered on the joint between the lower two of four fuel segments that made up the ship's right-side rocket booster. NASA film shows a plume of flame erupted at or near the joint, which may have triggered the explosion of Challenger's external fuel tank. Pastryk emphasized in a news conference that his company only produced the material used to make the giant O-rings. 'The O-ring is a component of a complex seal arrangement,' Pastryk said. Parker's Berea, Ky., plant produces 12 -foot sections of cord about one-quarter inch in diameter. Three pieces of the cord are spliced together by another company, Hydra Pac Inc. of Salt Lake City, to form the O-ring. The O-rings are part of a complex joint design and provide a barrier to prevent hot gas or flame from burning propellant inside the booster rocket from escaping through the joints between fuel segments.

“A lot of new engineers really struggle with making drawings, especially because most universities do an awful job teaching the concept” - 10:10 Agreed! That was one of the largest problems that I had to deal with in both my design and manufacturing work. I received drawings all the time from “specialized” shops full of new grads that had no concept of what a good drawing was supposed to be like. After phoning them, they would say “just do your best to meet the dimensions”… but they didn’t realize that conflicting dimensions will make the part inoperable or not function correctly. Anyways, this is an awesome video! Thanks for producing it. Looking forward to diving into more of your work! 👏
